Latest News

February 7th (10:00 p.m.):  I have to say, this was the best Super Bowl we have had in 10 years, in my opinion... since the Rams vs. Titans.  It was also a great competition, with several lucky winners, along with some very impressive results in the GQ Challenge.
You can go to the Squares and GQ Challenge areas to download the final Excel file with the results for the pool, and you will also find webpage versions of the $75 and $25 boards and the final standings for the GQC.  To see a complete list of our winners for the pool, go to the Prizes area.  The winners will be contacted shortly about their prize money.  Next year, I will be back with another edition of this pool, and I have a couple of ideas to streamline things and speed up the process with the GQ Challenge, so hopefully we will not have so many delays.  Next time, I am thinking we will have a $100 board and a $25 board.  If you have any other ideas, let me hear them.

Next up, we will have our March Madness 2008 competition, and it looks to be the biggest pool in our history, as we have broken the all-time record for number of entries in site history the last three years with the Madness Pool.  I will have it ready for you to join the last week of February... be ready to sign-up!  Also, I will have info on Fantasy Baseball at that time.  And our other competition of the spring/summer will be a brand new offering... an event we have never covered... the Summer Olympics!  Finally, in a couple of days, I will be emailing everyone with the Hall of Fame results, so stay tuned!

Have a great February!

Pool Format
The 2008 Super Bowl Squares Pool is just a standard squares board for the big game, but it has a twist.
This is the third year of this competition.  It has been very fun the last two years, so it is back for 2008!
There is only room for 100 players, and it will fill up first-come, first-served, so don't delay in signing up!
You will receive numbers for the Super Bowl, and if your numbers match the score at the end of any of
the four quarters, you will win a cash prize.  There are 8 cash prizes available to win with your numbers.
Those cash prizes do not require any skill to win, which is great if you enjoy a competition based on luck.
However, there is a skill-based side competition included in the pool called the Game Questions Challenge.
You will answer several questions about Super Bowl XLII, and the 2 players with the most points from
their answers will also win cash!  With my Super Bowl competition, you have an element of luck and skill!

Joining, Fees & Deadlines
The pool covers Super Bowl XLII, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Central Time, on Sunday, February 3rd, 2008.
The entry fee is $75 per square.  Multiple squares per person ARE allowed (additional entry fees apply).
The deadline to join the Super Bowl Squares Pool is at 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Super Bowl Sunday.
This is also the deadline for your GQ Challenge answers (missing it forfeits your chance at those prizes).
The following rules about the entry fee are very important, so be sure to read them very carefully:

1)  I MUST receive your entry fee by Saturday, February 2nd, or your square will go to someone else!
2)  You can send your entry fee by mailing a check/money order, or you can pay online by using PayPal.
HOWEVER, it is still risky for me to use PayPal, so if it will arrive in time, I would prefer for most to mail
their entry fee to me.  If it is near the deadline though, feel free to use PayPal, so you can pay quickly.
3)  Late entry fees will be accepted, but only from former pool players, and their entry fee MUST be
postmarked by the 2nd.  (If you are using PayPal, you have to pay on or before the 3rd!)  New players
are REQUIRED to have their entry fee to me ON or BEFORE Saturday, February 2nd - no exceptions!
4)  On Super Bowl Sunday, if we still have squares available, you may still join, even though it will be
past the deadline by then, but your only payment option will be PayPal, and you must pay before kickoff.

Because the entry fee for this pool is high, and due to the fact that the entire competition takes place in
one day, I have to be very strict with the entry fees; otherwise, I have problems with players not paying.
After the pool has ended, if we have players that failed to pay their entry fee, the prizes may be lowered
slightly to compensate for the missing payments (these players will also be banned from future pools).
After reading the rest of the Rules, go to the Join area to purchase your squares for the Super Bowl pool.
Once all 100 squares are reserved, no one else will be able to join, so please reserve your square early!
If several more players are interested in playing, it is possible that we will try to fill up two square boards.
(If we have a second board, it will probably have a lower entry fee, around $25 per square, but the cash
prizes will be less, and this board will not include the GQ Challenge... it will just have the numbers.)

A note about the entry fee:  You may have noticed that the $75 entry fee is one of the highest out of
all the competitions at Barker's Pools.  This pool is meant to be our big season-ending finale, with some
very big cash prizes, so it has a high fee.  My goal is to have $10,000 in the prize pool in the next few
years, so I will slowly raise the entry fee each year until it reaches $100 per square... high, but worth it.

The Squares
The Squares portion of the pool works like any other squares contest you may have played in the past:
We start with a blank 10 x 10 grid.  The 100 squares that make up the grid will be randomly assigned
to the players (this random method is described in the section below).  Along the top and left side of the
grid, there will be 10 numbers ranging from 0 to 9.  The numbers along the top represent one of the
teams playing in the Super Bowl, and the numbers along the left side represent the other team.  Using
the location of your square on the grid, you will know what numbers are assigned to you.  For example,
your square may match up with Patriots-7 at the top and Giants-4 along the left side.  If the last digit
of the score for each team in the Super Bowl matches up with your numbers at the end of a quarter, you
will win a cash prize!  Using the above example, let's say that the score at the end of the 2nd Quarter is
Patriots-7 vs. Giants-14... that matches your numbers, so you win a prize!  There are four cash prizes
awarded in that way, one for each quarter.  In addition, four smaller cash prizes are awarded to those
that have the matching numbers but the opposite team.  Again, using the above example, let's say the
score at the end of the 2nd Quarter is reversed, Patriots-14 vs. Giants-7, so your numbers match, but
with the other team winning.  In that case, you win a smaller prize for having the Reverse Square!
(The 4th Quarter Square includes any overtime points that are scored, if there is an overtime.)

Now, what I described above is how your normal Super Bowl squares board works.  My squares pool
works basically the same way, however, there are TWO very unique differences in my competition:
1)
The first big difference is the Game Questions Challenge, but that will be discussed further below.
2)  Above I stated that there is one row of numbers along the top and left side of the grid where you will
find your numbers that you hope will match the score at the end of each quarter.  In my competition,
there are actually four rows of numbers along the top and left side.  Each row will correspond with
each quarter of the game, so you will actually have four sets of numbers assigned to your square.  This
way, if you receive one bad set of numbers, such as a 9 and a 5 (which the score will unlikely ever be),
you are not stuck with those numbers for the entire game.  This way, you have more opportunities to win!

All of this is probably difficult to visualize in your head after reading through the instructions above.
It will be much easier when you see it in action.  If you will go to the Squares area of this page, you will
find a Microsoft Excel file that we will use to track everything, from all of the squares to the GQ Challenge.
You can download this Excel file from the site, but I will also email it out to all of the players periodically.

How the Squares are Assigned
In a pool with this format (where your success is mostly determined by the location of your square), it is
important that you can be completely sure that all of the squares are assigned in a 100% random way.
I thought this would be difficult to do, but I developed a system that works well and is totally random:
(While effective, it is quite complex, so if you are not concerned with it, you can go to the next section.)
1)  If you will download the blank Microsoft Excel file from the Squares area, you will see that it does
not have any numbers or players filled in yet.  This is what I will start with before the competition begins.
2)  Once all 100 squares have been purchased, I will randomly place each player somewhere on the
grid (remember that no numbers are on the grid yet, so it does not matter where everyone is placed).
The only criteria I will use is: if you have purchased multiple entries, then your squares will be spread
out so they do not touch, and this will ensure that you do not automatically have any duplicate numbers.
3)  After all 100 players have been placed on the grid, I will email the Excel file to everyone so they can
verify their position before the numbers are assigned.  In this email, I will list two college basketball
games that I have chosen that will be nationally televised on ESPN a few days before the Super Bowl.
4)  These two games will help us randomly determine the numbers on the squares grid.  The first game
will determine the four rows at the top of the grid, and the second game will determine the four rows on
the left side.  We will record the halftime and final score for each team in the two games.  If the halftime
score is Notre Dame-37 vs. Pittsburgh-42, for example, we have a 7 and a 2 (we will use the second digit
of each score), so the first row on the grid would start with a 7 and would be numbered 8, 9, 0, 1, and
so on all the way across.  The second row would start with a 2 and would continue 3, 4, 5, and so on.
5)  The third and fourth row will be filled in the same way using the final score for each team from the
first game, and likewise, the four rows of numbers on the left side of the squares grid will be filled in by
using the halftime and final score from the second game of the doubleheader.  This way everyone can be
assured that the numbers are being randomly assigned and cannot be manipulated by me or anyone else.

The Game Questions Challenge
The biggest complaint you hear about a traditional squares pool is that it involves no skill whatsoever.
We solved that problem with this Squares Pool with something I call the Game Questions Challenge.
Once the two teams playing in Super Bowl XLII have been determined, the Microsoft Excel file will be
updated (it should be available by January 28th), and in it you will find 50 questions about the game.
The questions will be worth anywhere from 1 to 5 points, with the final question being worth 10 points.
Questions that require more luck to answer, such as, "Which team will win the coin toss?", will be worth
the least amount of points, while the harder questions, such as, "Which team will have more rushing
yards?", will be worth the most points.  All of the questions will be worth a grand total of 150 points.
There are also tiebreaker questions that we will use to break any ties in the standings that may occur.
You will have until 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Super Bowl Sunday to submit your GQ Challenge answers.
Note:  If you bought multiple squares, you can submit a set of GQ Challenge answers for each entry.

To submit your answers through the website, go to the GQ Challenge area and fill out the form there.
You can also email your Challenge answers to me, or you can phone them in by calling 801-790-4236.
Once I receive your answers, I will send you an email confirmation, verifying that I received your choices.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that you receive the confirmation email.  If you do not have it within 12
hours, I DO NOT have your answers, so you will need to submit them again or you will receive 0 points!
You also should verify that this email contains all of the answers you want to use for the GQ Challenge.
If you fail to submit your answers before the deadline, you will FORFEIT your GQ Challenge opportunity.
Before the game, I will email everyone the updated Excel file with all of the GQ answers for each player.
This is a one-man operation, so please be patient if the Excel file is not sent out immediately before the
Super Bowl begins; it may take me an hour or so after the game kicks off to get everything updated.

After the game, I will update the results, and the player with the most points will win a $1,250 prize!
The player finishing in 2nd Place will also receive a cash prize, and 3rd Place will receive a pool credit.

Winning
There are TEN cash prizes up for grabs in the 2008 Super Bowl Squares Pool.  Go to the News & Info
area to see how many squares are reserved, and the Prizes area contains a breakdown of the prizes.
Cash prize winners will receive their winnings within a maximum of 30 days from the end of the pool.
I pay winners with a check or money order, but on request, I may be able to pay a prize using PayPal.

Other Rules
You must provide a full name and email address in order to join the pool.  Do not worry though... these
will never be displayed on the site.  Only your anonymous entry name will appear on the squares grid.

I do send occasional emails regarding our upcoming pools.  To stop receiving these, just let me know.

the integrity and fairness of the pool.  Any changes will be discussed with all of the players beforehand.
Finally, and most importantly, have lots of fun and enjoy Super Bowl XLII!  Good luck & have lots of fun!

Prizes

The 2008 Super Bowl Squares Pool features one of the most lucrative prize
pools we offer: this is our grand finale to wrap-up a great year of competitions,
and we like to hand out big cash prizes to our lucky winners!  Below, you will
find the prize breakdown we used for the $75 squares board, and below that,
you will find a list of our winners for both the $75 board and the $25 board.

The prize pool was divided up & awarded as follows:

The 2nd Place player in the GQ Challenge received $300.
The 3rd Place player in the GQ Challenge received a $25
pool credit.

The remaining 13% of the prize pool was used to support and expand this website.
Unfortunately, running this site takes time & money, so a small portion of each pool's entry fees
will be used to offset my expenses.  This portion will be between 10%-20% of the collected entry
fees, depending on the pool.  The administrative costs include: domain registration, hosting fees,
PayPal & banking fees, pool software, web design software, and other miscellaneous expenses.
