Latest News

December 11th (6:50 a.m.):  I have an announcement:  Our final two Survivor players have decided to split the Final Survivor cash prize, so this competition is over!  You can review the final results for the pool in the Standings.  Congratulations to our two lucky winners: Westlake Warriors and Iltehbp3, as you both have won a $1,456.00 cash prize!  It was another great year of the Survivor Pool, and I hope you all had a great time playing.  I think changing to a single-elimination format was a good decision, but I would like to hear what you all think, so email me with your opinions.  Next season, I will consider having two Survivor pools, with one being single-elimination and the other being double.  Thank you all for playing this year... I appreciate it.

Happy Holidays!

Rules

Pool Format
The 2007 NFL Survivor Pool is a season-long competition covering the 17-week NFL regular season.
Last season we had 158 players, so this season it should not be difficult to reach the 200-entry mark.
This competition has been a double-elimination survivor format for the last three seasons, but we have
decided to up the ante this year and move to a single-elimination format... get ready for a challenge!
For those unfamiliar with this pool format, your goal is to simply pick one winning NFL team per week.
You pick your winner straight up (no point spread), but you must pick a different team every week.
If your team wins, you survive to play the next week, but if they lose, you are eliminated from the pool.
The last surviving player receives a very large cash prize (this year the competition is winner-take-all)!

Joining, Fees & Deadlines
The pool begins on Thursday night of September 6th, and it will end once we have one sole survivor.
The entry fee is $20 per entry.  Multiple entries per person ARE allowed (additional entry fees apply).
You may want more than one entry since this is now single-elimination... once you're out, you're out!
(Due to the amount of work involved with running a pool of this size, this year 20% of the entry funds
will be taken out and used for administrative costs, rather than the 15% that is usually deducted.)

The deadline to join and pay for your entries is Thursday, September 6th, at 7:00 p.m. (Central).
Now, there is also a pick deadline each week, HOWEVER, this weekly deadline is now earlier than what
it was last season, so please pay close attention to these various rules about the deadlines:

1) Entry Deadline -
Failure to send your entry fee before the deadline on 9/6 may disqualify your entry!
(PayPal can no longer be used to pay your entry fee; you must use a check/money order.)
Late entry fees will only be accepted up to one week late, but the payment MUST be postmarked on or
before the deadline.  You will not be eligible to win any prizes without a properly postmarked entry fee
!

2) Pick Deadline - Most weeks, the pick deadline will be Sunday at 1:00 a.m. (Central), about 11
hours before the first game.
(I realize that making the deadline earlier than last season may not be
popular, but this gives me more time to post the Survivor picks
on the site before the games begin.)
HOWEVER, several weeks start with a Thursday or Saturday game, and they will use the following:
The pick deadline for Week 1 is on Thursday, September 6th, at 7:00 p.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 12 is on Thursday, November 22nd, at 10:30 a.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 13 is on Thursday, November 29th, at 6:00 p.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 14 is on Thursday, December 6th, at 6:00 p.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 15 is on Thursday, December 13th, at 6:00 p.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 16 is on Thursday, December 20th, at 6:00 p.m. Central.
The pick deadline for Week 17 is on Saturday, December 29th, at 6:00 p.m. Central.
Note: If a player misses one of these early deadlines, they will still be permitted to submit a Survivor
pick before the usual Sunday deadline.  However, they CANNOT choose ANY teams from the non-Sunday
games!  If they do, they will receive an automatic loss for the week and will be eliminated from the pool.
(All of these different deadlines can be confusing, so I will send out deadline reminders each week.)

3) Special Week 1 Note - Since this pool wasn't ready to join until close to the start of the NFL season,
the Week 1 deadline is only 30 minutes prior to the first game: 7:00 p.m. Central on Thursday, 9/6/07.
This gives us more time to have people sign-up to play in the pool, however, this means that I will not
have time to post the Survivor picks on the site before the game.  In fact, during any week with an early
deadline, I will not post the picks on the site until we reach the normal Sunday deadline, but if any players
choose a team that will be playing before Sunday, I will email everyone a list of the early picks.
If you pay your entry fee on time, but fail to submit your Survivor pick before the Sunday games begin
on Week 1, you will be eliminated from the pool, and you will not receive a refund of your entry fee!

It is YOUR responsibility to make the deadline each week, but email reminders to make your pick will go
out twice weekly, once when the pick sheet is posted on the site and once 24 hours before the deadline.
After reading the rest of the Rules, go to the Join area to purchase your entries for football season!

How to Play
This pool is definitely one of our most exciting (and stressful), as each game has extremely high stakes.
Every Tuesday, the pick sheet will be posted on the website, featuring the 16 NFL games for that week.
Most weeks will have 16 games, but because of the byes, some weeks will only have 13 or 14 games.
Once the pick sheet is posted, submit your pick via the website, by email, or by phone (801-790-4236).
Remember, the pick deadline is usually several hours before the first game, so don't procrastinate!
To submit your pick through the website, follow these instructions:

Once the pick sheet is posted each Tuesday, you will have less than five days to submit your picks!
(Remember, a few weeks begin on Thursday, so that only gives you two days to submit your pick!)

To begin, navigate to the pick sheet and enter your name, your entry name, and your email address.
On the pick sheet, you will find each NFL match-up for the week, along with each team's record.
To make your pick, simply choose ONE team for that week that you think has the best chance of winning.
Keep in mind, however, that once you use a team, you CANNOT use that team again for the remainder
of the regular season, so you must use a bit of strategy when deciding when to use the top NFL teams.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that you do not use a team twice.  If you do pick a team twice during
the season, and you do not change your pick prior to the deadline, you will receive a LOSS for the week.
Important:  Before submitting your pick, be sure to 'check' the box that says "Email Me a Copy".
Last but not least, to send your pick in, click the Submit Picks button located at the bottom of the page!

After you submit your pick (assuming you chose the option on your pick sheet), an email will be sent to
you, displaying your pick for that week.  If you did not choose this option, email me for a confirmation.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that the pick you want is the pick that is in the system for you.
If you see a problem or you do not receive the pick confirmation, BE SURE to let me know via email.
Remember, during weeks with an early deadline, the pick sheet will remain up even after the deadline
has passed, so if you are late, you can still submit a pick before the normal Sunday deadline.
  However,
if you use this late deadline to pick one of the teams that played early, your entry will be
disqualified.
You ARE allowed to change or re-submit your pick as many times as you like before the deadline, but if
you try to change your pick after the early deadline has passed (for example, if you pick one of the
teams playing early and they lose, so you return to the pick sheet and change your pick), you will also
be disqualified.  The late-deadline rule is only in place to give a player more time to make their pick.

Scoring & Winning
The pick for each player will be posted in the Standings before the first game begins each week.
(I expect to have the Standings updated well before the Sunday football games kick-off each week, but
this is a one-man operation, so please be patient if things are not posted on time on rare occasions.)

The Standings will be updated throughout each day of games with the result of everyone's pick.
A chart will also be posted in the Standings showing everyone's pick for each week of the season.
The survival format is about as easy as it gets:

If the team you chose WINS, you will survive and get to play again next week, choosing a new team.
If the team you chose LOSES, you will be eliminated from the competition, so better luck next year!
If the team you choose has a game that ends in a tie (after overtime), it will count as a LOSS for you.
As the weeks roll by, players will be eliminated.  Only the surviving players will continue to play.

The last surviving player will receive a large cash prize (the runner-up will receive a consolation prize)!
The cash prize amounts are determined by the number of players in the pool.  Go to the News & Info
section to see the current number of players, and the Prizes area contains a breakdown of the prizes.
If you are the Final Survivor, you will receive your big cash prize within a maximum of 30 days from
the end of the competition, however, you will likely have your winnings within two or three weeks.

Tiebreaker
After the regular season, if two or more players are tied, the following tiebreaker will be used:
     1.  The win/loss record of the 17 Survivor picks from each player will be added together, and the
player who has the 17 teams with the lower combined winning percentage will win the tiebreaker.
The tiebreaker rewards the player that takes a greater risk by choosing weaker teams during the year.
If there is still a tie between players after the tiebreaker is enforced, then the prize will be evenly split.
In the event that all of the remaining players in the pool lose with their pick one week, they will all be revived for the next week and given another chance to pick in order to determine our prize winners.

Other Rules
You must provide a full name and email address in order to join the pool.  Do not worry though, as these
will never be displayed on the site.  Only your anonymous entry nickname will appear in the standings.
Barker's Pools will NEVER sell or distribute the contact information of our members to a third-party.
I do send occasional emails regarding our upcoming pools.  To stop receiving these, just let me know.
I reserve the right to make changes to the Rules midway through the competition in order to maintain
the integrity and fairness of the pool.  Any changes will be discussed with all of the players beforehand.
Have fun trying to survive!  Enjoy the 2007 NFL regular season!  The best of luck to everyone.

By joining this pool, you are stating that you have read and understand the Rules entirely.

Prizes

The 2007 NFL Survivor Pool  is over, and we have determined who our
Final Survivor is (we actually have two players remaining, as they have
decided to split the cash prize).  Below you'll find a chart that displays how
we divided up the pool entry fees, and further below the winners are listed!

The prize pool has been divided up & awarded as follows:

For EACH $20 entry fee that was added to the prize pool:

80% (or $16.00) went to the Final Survivor.
(The last two players chose to split the Final Survivor prize.)

With 182 players in the NFL Survivor Pool:

The two Final Survivors each received a $1,456 cash prize.

The remaining 20% of the prize pool was used to support and expand this website.
Unfortunately, running this site takes time & money, so a small portion of each pool's entry fees
will be used to offset my expenses.  This portion will be between 10%-20% of the collected entry
fees, depending on the pool.  The administrative costs include: domain registration, hosting fees,
PayPal & banking fees, pool software, web design software, and other miscellaneous expenses.
